Jesus Prepares to Enter Jerusalem

March 23, 2013

As they approached Jerusalem and came to Bethphage on the Mount of Olives, Jesus sent two disciples, saying to them, “Go to the village ahead of you, and at once you will find a donkey tied there, with her colt by her. Untie them and bring them to me. If anyone says anything to you, say that the Lord needs them, and he will send them right away.”

Matthew 21:1-3 (NIV)

I wonder, Jesus: Which two did you send to find the donkey? Did you send Peter and Andrew, fishermen from Galilee? They could have handled a boat in the waves, but a donkey on dry ground? Maybe you sent Judas Iscariot and Simon Peter, the betrayer and the denier. They would get their comeuppance soon enough. Or maybe you sent James and John, your cousins who had asked for the places of honor. It would be just like you to send those sons of thunder to fetch the donkey. The truth is they all needed a lesson in humility, a reminder that discipleship means being willing to do menial task. Lord Christ, as I prepare to enter Holy Week, make me a servant, too.

Amen
